The Four Agreements

The Four Agreements is a toltec widsom book written by Don Miguel Ruiz.

I’ve been reading this recently, though I’ve already read it once before.

I’m not big into “personal growth” books, I much rather read about history. When I read a couple chapters of The Four Agreements, I was hooked. I resonated a lot with what he was saying. The only thing I had to watch out for, was the way he talked about religion. So if you’re sensitive about things like that, I wouldn’t recommend this book. I always say though, approach everything with an open mind.

β€œYou express your own divinity by being alive and by loving yourself and others.” – Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements

These agreements he speaks of are codes for life. You may think it’s just common sense, but I believe it’s good to be reminded of these things and look at them in depth. He does a great job about that in his book, but here’s a quick look at the agreements.

The Four Agreements

  • Agreement 1.  Be Impeccable with your word – Say only what you mean and speak with integrity. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
  • Agreement 2. Don’t take anything personally (one of my favs) –  When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.
  • Agreement 3. Don’t make assumptions – Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate clearly with others to avoid misunderstandings.
  • Agreement 4. Always do your best – Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgement, self-abuse, and regret.

  1. I like the sounds of this book. I love “self-help” type of books, I always find them to be so inspiring in its own way. I think I want to add this to my book list for this year! Thanks for sharing it!

  2. I believe I’ve heard of this book before but haven’t read it yet. I actually read a lot of personal growth books and while many of them sound like common sense, I agree that it’s still good to be reminded of some of the points they make and to actually put them into action. With my winter semester starting I won’t have much time to do any leisure reading but one of my classes assigned the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” which is decent. I will have to check out the four arrangements at some point though! πŸ™‚

    1. As a senior in high school they made us read The 7 habits book. I think I still have it, I should dust it off and read it again! I remember liking it but not taking it seriously at the time. It would be good to read it again. Thanks for stopping by! Have a great day ❀
